Cornell Visits HSCC

The shelter underwent some major changes this past November after an evaluation made possible through Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. A team of three Shelter Certified Veterinarians came to HSCC and were very impressed with the operations of the shelter and the work being done throughout the County to benefit homeless pets. One of the biggest changes made after the visit was the design of our new cat isolation ward. Turning the meet and greet room (which was seldom used) into an isolation ward, has created a quiet place for a sick cat to recover without contaminating the healthy areas of the shelter. Each cat  area within the shelter has since been color coded with its own supplies to prevent any chance of germs crossing into other areas,. A dog enrichment program has been implemented saving the dogs from boredom during their stay at the shelter, and the foster program is being revamped. The staff was pleased with all the compliments that were offered by this team of professionals and thankful for their insight on how to improve. We recognize that there is always room for improvement in this ever changing profession and having such an amazing team to work with was an incredible experience. We look forward to inviting the team back to see the changes put into place.
